Organized in 1916, the Farm Crops Department was established to coordinate research efforts in crop experimentation at the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. Prior to 1916, Experiment Station research had been directed by the Department of Agronomy, which was established in 1907. Schoth was born in Hannah, Wyoming on May 24, 1891. He came to Oregon Agricultural College as a student in 1909, and received the B.S. in 1914 and the M.S. in 1917. Schoth worked as a Fellow at OAC from 1914-1916 and became an instructor (courtesy) in Farm Crops in 1924. He went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1917 as a Scientific Assistant.
